Malaysia has 443 species of palm trees where the Royal palm tree (Roystonea regia),
Bottle palm tree (Hyphorbe lagenicaulis) and Gebang tree (Corypha utan) are among the
types of palm trees that are widely used as ornamental trees while many others are used
for food and material use. In Malaysia, palm trees are probably one of the most common

plants in the country’s landscape. For this reason, a focus on palm trees may help to find
out whether the knowledge of plants among the younger generation has truly eroded as
v
patterns of the younger generation on the characteristics and uses of palm trees. Based
on the online survey that was participated by 44 respondents among Millennials, as well
as those of Generations Y and Z, the findings suggest that they actually knew about palm
trees. Unsurprisingly, oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis) were the most well-known palm
trees compared to other palm trees. Social media and websites are the main medium for
the younger generation to obtain information about palm trees, which was also expected.
This study has provided insightful findings and can be improved with better strategies
and more time for distributing the survey questions in order to obtain more respondents
to strengthen the representativeness of the findings.
